AC Not Cooling

If your air conditioner is running but the house is not getting cooler, we diagnose and repair it across Oregon and Washington. This is the most common air conditioning repair call we take: the outdoor unit hums, air moves at the vents, and the temperature will not budge. Before you call, check the thermostat setting and batteries, look for a tripped breaker, and change a loaded filter. If none of that fixes it, get in touch and we will schedule a diagnostic visit.

HVAC technician at work

Search for it as an AC not cooling or air conditioner blowing warm air and you land in the same place: one visit, one written quote.

What an AC not cooling visit involves

We start where the symptom starts. A technician measures the temperature difference between return and supply air, checks static pressure, and watches how the system behaves through a full cycle. That tells us quickly whether the problem is airflow, refrigerant, or a control that is not calling correctly. Many homes in the region run heat pumps rather than a separate AC, so we also confirm the reversing valve is actually moving into cooling. You get a plain explanation of what we found and the repair options.

What we check on the system

Common causes include a clogged filter or blocked coil, a failed capacitor, a contactor that is not pulling in, a bad blower motor, a refrigerant leak, or a thermostat wired or programmed wrong. Outside, we clear grass clippings, cottonwood fluff and blackberry growth off the coil, since a smothered condenser cannot reject heat. Inside, we look at the evaporator coil and drain. If a coil is iced over, we thaw it and find out why instead of just clearing the ice.

How we decide repair is the right call

We weigh the age of the equipment, the part that failed, and whether the same fault has come back before. A capacitor or contactor on an otherwise sound system is a straightforward air conditioner repair. A compressor failure or a refrigerant leak in an older coil is a different conversation, and we will say so plainly rather than sell you a repair that buys one season. If ductwork or filtration is starving the system, we tell you that too, because a new unit will not fix undersized returns.

AC Not Cooling — quick answers

Why is my AC blowing air that is not cold?

Air movement with no cooling usually points to refrigerant loss, a compressor or capacitor fault, or a heat pump stuck in the wrong mode. Change the filter first, then have us test the system under load.

My outdoor unit has ice on it in summer. What now?

Turn the system to fan only so the ice can melt and call us. Icing in cooling mode usually means restricted airflow or low refrigerant, and running it that way risks the compressor.

Could smoke season affect my cooling?

Yes. Homeowners often run tighter, higher-rated filters during smoke season, and a loaded filter chokes airflow enough to hurt cooling. We check static pressure and match filtration to what your system can actually pull.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form. Describe the noise, the smell, the temperature, and when it started. That detail helps us bring the right parts and gives you an honest idea of the visit ahead.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, refrigerant behaviour and the outdoor unit. We tell you what failed and why, in plain language, before anyone reaches for a part or a price.

  3. Step 3

    You choose the repair

We lay out the fix, any parts on order, and what happens if you wait. Once you agree, we do the work and confirm the system holds temperature before we pack up and leave.

Why homeowners call us

  • Heat pumps are our normalIn this region heat pumps outnumber furnaces, so defrost boards, reversing valves and short cycling in wet weather are everyday work for us. We know how these systems behave in a cold December rain, not just on a test bench.
  • Wet winter defrost problemsIce on the outdoor coil, a unit that runs and runs without warming the house, puddles that refreeze under the pad. We trace whether it is a sensor, a stuck valve, drainage, or airflow, then fix the actual cause.
  • Filtration after smoke seasonWildfire smoke turned indoor air quality into a real conversation here. We look at filter fit, return sizing and IAQ options that your blower can actually push air through, rather than choking the system with the wrong media.
  • We explain before we chargeYou get the diagnosis, the options and the trade-offs before work starts. If a repair is not worth it on an old system, we say so. No pressure, no jargon dumped on you at the door.
