What AC compressor work actually involves
A compressor job starts with diagnosis, not parts. We check voltage at the unit, the contactor, the start and run capacitor, and the windings inside the compressor itself, because a bad capacitor imitates a dead compressor closely enough to fool a lot of people. If the compressor is genuinely locked or shorted, replacement means recovering refrigerant, cutting and brazing lines, pulling a deep vacuum, and weighing the charge back in. That is sealed-system work and it stays with us, never a homeowner.
What we check and what we install
We look at the whole circuit before condemning anything: disconnect and breaker, contactor points, capacitor values, wiring at the compressor terminals, and the pressures the system is running. We also check what killed it. A clogged coil, a restricted filter, a failing fan motor, or a refrigerant leak will take out a new compressor too. Depending on findings we replace the capacitor or contactor, install a hard-start or replacement compressor, or in some cases recommend a new outdoor unit instead.
How we decide repair or replace
We weigh the age of the system, the refrigerant it uses, and what else is worn. On a newer system with a clean coil and good airflow, replacing the compressor makes sense and we say so. On an older unit running discontinued refrigerant, with a leak somewhere in the coil and a tired fan motor, a compressor swap is money spent on a system that will fail again. Can I keep running my AC while I wait for compressor repair?
No. Turn cooling off at the thermostat. A compressor that keeps trying to start against a locked rotor draws heavy current, overheats the windings, and can trip breakers or damage the contactor. Fan-only for air movement is fine.
Why does my outdoor unit hum but not cool?
That is often a failed run capacitor, a stuck contactor, or a seized compressor. They sound similar from the yard. We test the capacitor and windings with meters, so you find out which one before spending anything.
Does compressor failure mean I need a whole new AC?
Not always. Newer systems with current refrigerant and no other failures are worth repairing. Older units with leaks, a worn fan motor, or obsolete refrigerant usually make replacement the better spend. We give you the measurements either way.
