Duct Sealing

Duct sealing closes the gaps, cracks and loose joints in your duct system so the air your equipment heats or cools actually reaches your rooms. We do this work for homeowners across Oregon and Washington, usually when one room never gets comfortable, the attic or crawlspace feels conditioned, or dust keeps coming back after every filter change. If that sounds like your house, call us and describe which rooms are the problem. We will look at the ducts before we talk about anything bigger.

Whether you call it duct sealing or air duct repair, the work is identical and so is the quote you approve first.

What duct sealing actually involves

We start in the crawlspace, attic or wherever your ducts run, and we follow the system from the air handler out to the registers. Disconnected takeoffs, torn flex duct, crushed runs and joints that were only taped get found by hand and by eye. Then we seal with mastic and mesh at the connections, replace duct tape that has let go, and reattach anything that has fallen off its boot. Insulation goes back over the repaired sections so the sealed duct stays sealed.

What we check and what we install

We check static pressure and airflow at the registers, look at return sizing, and note whether the return path is pulling air from unconditioned space. Panned joist returns and open platform returns are common culprits in older houses across the region. We install mastic, mesh tape, new duct straps and support, replacement flex where the old run is beyond patching, and sealed boots at the floor or ceiling. If filtration came up during smoke season, we make sure the filter housing itself is not leaking around the frame.

How we decide sealing is the right call

Sealing makes sense when the equipment is running fine but the delivery is not. A heat pump that keeps up in one half of the house, rooms with weak airflow at the register, a crawlspace that feels warm in January, and dust that returns fast all point at the ducts. If we find the real problem is undersized returns or a collapsed main trunk, we tell you that instead, because sealing a duct that cannot carry the air will not fix comfort. We would rather explain the difference than sell you the easy version.

Duct Sealing — quick answers

Will duct sealing fix one cold room?

Often, yes, if that room's run is leaking or disconnected. Sometimes the cause is a crushed duct or a run that is too long and small for the distance. We check before we commit to an answer.

Do you have to get into the crawlspace?

Usually. Most leaks are at joints and boots you cannot see from inside the house. We work from the crawlspace, attic or basement depending on how your duct system was laid out.

Does sealing ducts help with wildfire smoke?

It helps, because sealed ducts and a sealed filter housing stop unfiltered air from bypassing your filter. Sealing is one part of it. Filtration and fresh air choices are the other part, and we can talk through both.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form. Describe the noise, the smell, the temperature, and when it started. That detail helps us bring the right parts and gives you an honest idea of the visit ahead.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, refrigerant behaviour and the outdoor unit. We tell you what failed and why, in plain language, before anyone reaches for a part or a price.

  3. Step 3

    You choose the repair

We lay out the fix, any parts on order, and what happens if you wait. Once you agree, we do the work and confirm the system holds temperature before we pack up and leave.

Why homeowners call us

  • Heat pumps are our normalIn this region heat pumps outnumber furnaces, so defrost boards, reversing valves and short cycling in wet weather are everyday work for us. We know how these systems behave in a cold December rain, not just on a test bench.
  • Wet winter defrost problemsIce on the outdoor coil, a unit that runs and runs without warming the house, puddles that refreeze under the pad. We trace whether it is a sensor, a stuck valve, drainage, or airflow, then fix the actual cause.
  • Filtration after smoke seasonWildfire smoke turned indoor air quality into a real conversation here. We look at filter fit, return sizing and IAQ options that your blower can actually push air through, rather than choking the system with the wrong media.
  • We explain before we chargeYou get the diagnosis, the options and the trade-offs before work starts. If a repair is not worth it on an old system, we say so. No pressure, no jargon dumped on you at the door.
