Defrost Cycle Problems

We repair heat pump defrost cycle problems for homeowners across Oregon and Washington, from outdoor coils that ice over and never clear to units that run defrost every twenty minutes for no reason. You need us when the outdoor unit is buried in ice, when the indoor air turns lukewarm on cold mornings, or when you hear a loud whoosh and a burst of steam far too often. Turn the system to emergency heat if you have it, leave the ice alone, and call us to book a look.

What the job involves

Defrost work starts with watching the system run. A heat pump is supposed to frost up in wet weather and then reverse itself for a few minutes to melt clear. When that sequence breaks, the fault is usually in the sensing, the timing, or the reversing. We force a defrost cycle, time it, and watch what the outdoor unit actually does. From there we trace the control board, sensors and reversing valve until the failing part shows itself. Most visits are a single trip.

What we check

We check the defrost thermostat or coil sensor first, since a drifting sensor tells the board the coil is warm when it is packed in ice. We check the reversing valve and its solenoid, the outdoor fan and its capacitor, the control board timing, and refrigerant charge behaviour under load. We also look at drainage, because water sheeting off the coil and refreezing at the base pan is common in our wet winters. Clogged base pan drains and low units sitting in standing water cause repeat icing.

How we decide it is the right call

Light frost on the outdoor coil in damp weather is normal and clears on its own. We call it a defrost fault when ice covers the whole coil, when it stays after a full cycle, or when the unit defrosts so often that your house never warms up. Before we come out, change the filter and confirm your vents are open, since restricted airflow can look like a defrost problem. If the coil is solid ice, shut the system off and call us rather than chipping at it.

Defrost Cycle Problems — quick answers

Is it normal for my heat pump to steam outside in winter?

Yes. Steam and a whooshing sound mean the unit reversed itself to melt frost off the outdoor coil. It should last a few minutes and happen occasionally, not every twenty minutes.

Can I pour hot water on the iced coil?

We would rather you did not. Water refreezes, and it can bend fins or reach electrical parts. Shut the system down, switch to emergency heat if you have it, and call us.

Why does my house feel cold during defrost?

During defrost the system briefly runs in cooling mode outdoors, so indoor air cools. Backup heat should cover that gap. If it feels cold every time, the backup stage may not be engaging.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form. Describe the noise, the smell, the temperature, and when it started. That detail helps us bring the right parts and gives you an honest idea of the visit ahead.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, refrigerant behaviour and the outdoor unit. We tell you what failed and why, in plain language, before anyone reaches for a part or a price.

  3. Step 3

    You choose the repair

We lay out the fix, any parts on order, and what happens if you wait. Once you agree, we do the work and confirm the system holds temperature before we pack up and leave.

Why homeowners call us

  • Heat pumps are our normalIn this region heat pumps outnumber furnaces, so defrost boards, reversing valves and short cycling in wet weather are everyday work for us. We know how these systems behave in a cold December rain, not just on a test bench.
  • Wet winter defrost problemsIce on the outdoor coil, a unit that runs and runs without warming the house, puddles that refreeze under the pad. We trace whether it is a sensor, a stuck valve, drainage, or airflow, then fix the actual cause.
  • Filtration after smoke seasonWildfire smoke turned indoor air quality into a real conversation here. We look at filter fit, return sizing and IAQ options that your blower can actually push air through, rather than choking the system with the wrong media.
  • We explain before we chargeYou get the diagnosis, the options and the trade-offs before work starts. If a repair is not worth it on an old system, we say so. No pressure, no jargon dumped on you at the door.
