What zoning work actually involves
Zoning splits your duct system into sections, each with its own thermostat and a motorized damper that opens or closes as that area calls for heating or cooling. A zone panel sits between those thermostats and your equipment, deciding who gets air and telling the blower how hard to run. On a retrofit we open ceilings or crawl spaces to reach trunk lines, set dampers, run low-voltage wire and configure the panel. On a repair we usually find one stuck damper motor or a miswired thermostat.
What we check and install
We start by measuring what the ducts can carry, because zoning a system that is already short on airflow just moves the complaint to another room. Then we look at static pressure, bypass arrangements, blower staging and whether your equipment can run at a lower output when only one zone is open. Installs include damper actuators, a zone panel, thermostats or sensors per area, and a bypass or dump zone if the numbers call for it. We label everything so the next visit is faster.
How we decide zoning is the right call
Zoning makes sense when rooms differ for structural reasons: a second floor that bakes, a bonus room over the garage, a north-facing addition that never warms up. It does not fix leaky ducts, missing insulation or an undersized return. If a quick balance at the registers and a duct repair will solve it, we say so and skip the zone panel. Variable-speed equipment zones far better than a single-stage furnace, so we talk about your system's age before recommending anything.

Can I add zoning to my existing heat pump?
Often yes, if the ductwork has enough capacity and the outdoor unit can modulate. Single-speed heat pumps can be zoned with a bypass, but comfort is better with variable-speed equipment. We measure airflow first and tell you either way.
Why did one zone stop blowing air?
Usually a damper actuator that failed closed, a broken low-voltage wire, or a thermostat that lost its connection to the zone panel. Check the thermostat batteries and settings first, then call us and tell us which zone went quiet.
Do I need a thermostat in every room?
No. Zones follow how the house behaves, not how many doors it has. Most homes we work on end up with two or three zones, grouped by floor or by which side of the house takes the afternoon sun.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the quote form. Describe the noise, the smell, the temperature, and when it started. That detail helps us bring the right parts and gives you an honest idea of the visit ahead.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, refrigerant behaviour and the outdoor unit. We tell you what failed and why, in plain language, before anyone reaches for a part or a price.
- Step 3
You choose the repair
We lay out the fix, any parts on order, and what happens if you wait. Once you agree, we do the work and confirm the system holds temperature before we pack up and leave.

Why homeowners call us
- Heat pumps are our normalIn this region heat pumps outnumber furnaces, so defrost boards, reversing valves and short cycling in wet weather are everyday work for us. We know how these systems behave in a cold December rain, not just on a test bench.
- Wet winter defrost problemsIce on the outdoor coil, a unit that runs and runs without warming the house, puddles that refreeze under the pad. We trace whether it is a sensor, a stuck valve, drainage, or airflow, then fix the actual cause.
- Filtration after smoke seasonWildfire smoke turned indoor air quality into a real conversation here. We look at filter fit, return sizing and IAQ options that your blower can actually push air through, rather than choking the system with the wrong media.
- We explain before we chargeYou get the diagnosis, the options and the trade-offs before work starts. If a repair is not worth it on an old system, we say so. No pressure, no jargon dumped on you at the door.
