Vent & Register Cleaning

Vent and register cleaning is the removal of dust, pet hair, drywall grit and smoke-season buildup from the supply and return openings in your floors, walls and ceilings, along with the first few feet of duct behind them. Homeowners across Oregon and Washington usually call us after a remodel, after a wildfire smoke stretch, or when one room smells dusty every time the heat pump starts. Call us and describe which rooms bother you, and we will book a look at the vents that matter.

What the job involves

We pull the register covers, wash or vacuum them depending on finish, and clean the boot and accessible duct behind each opening with a brush and a vacuum that catches fine particles instead of blowing them back into the room. Floor registers in older homes collect the worst of it, from dropped coins to years of pet hair. We put drop cloths down, work room by room, and reseat every cover so it sits flat and the damper still moves.

What we check while we are in there

Open registers tell us a lot. We look at the boot for rust, gaps at the subfloor, and crushed flex duct that chokes airflow to one room. We check that returns are not blocked by rugs or furniture, note filter condition and size, and confirm dampers are open rather than half shut from a previous season. If we find loose duct connections or a boot leaking into a crawlspace, we show you photos and explain what repair would take.

How we decide it is the right call

Vent and register cleaning helps when the problem is at the openings. Visible dust on the grille, gritty streaks on the ceiling around a supply, or a musty puff at startup all point that way. If your real complaint is one room that never gets warm, or a system that runs constantly, that is usually airflow, refrigerant or equipment sizing, and cleaning the vents will not fix it. We say so instead of selling the wrong job.

Vent & Register Cleaning — quick answers

Is this the same as full duct cleaning?

No. Vent and register cleaning covers the grilles, boots and the accessible duct behind them. Full duct cleaning reaches the trunk lines and branches. We often start with vents and recommend more only if we find it.

Did smoke season make my vents worse?

It can. Fine smoke particles settle in registers and on the dust already there, then get stirred up when the system cycles. If rooms smelled smoky indoors, cleaning the openings and changing the filter both help.

How often should vents and registers be cleaned?

Most homes do fine every few years, sooner with pets, allergies, or after remodeling work that puts drywall dust in the air. Regular filter changes stretch the interval considerably.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form. Describe the noise, the smell, the temperature, and when it started. That detail helps us bring the right parts and gives you an honest idea of the visit ahead.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, refrigerant behaviour and the outdoor unit. We tell you what failed and why, in plain language, before anyone reaches for a part or a price.

  3. Step 3

    You choose the repair

We lay out the fix, any parts on order, and what happens if you wait. Once you agree, we do the work and confirm the system holds temperature before we pack up and leave.

Why homeowners call us

  • Heat pumps are our normalIn this region heat pumps outnumber furnaces, so defrost boards, reversing valves and short cycling in wet weather are everyday work for us. We know how these systems behave in a cold December rain, not just on a test bench.
  • Wet winter defrost problemsIce on the outdoor coil, a unit that runs and runs without warming the house, puddles that refreeze under the pad. We trace whether it is a sensor, a stuck valve, drainage, or airflow, then fix the actual cause.
  • Filtration after smoke seasonWildfire smoke turned indoor air quality into a real conversation here. We look at filter fit, return sizing and IAQ options that your blower can actually push air through, rather than choking the system with the wrong media.
  • We explain before we chargeYou get the diagnosis, the options and the trade-offs before work starts. If a repair is not worth it on an old system, we say so. No pressure, no jargon dumped on you at the door.
