Thermostat Installation — Book a Visit Today

We install and replace thermostats for homes across Oregon and Washington, including smart thermostats, straight swaps of a failed unit, and zoning controls for houses that heat unevenly. Most calls start the same way: the screen is blank, the room temperature reading is off by several degrees, or a new thermostat was wired in and now the heat pump runs the wrong stage. A visit begins with what your system actually needs. Heat pumps with auxiliary heat and multi-stage equipment need a thermostat that speaks their language, so we check the wiring at the air handler as well as the wall. Then we mount, wire, configure the equipment type, and watch a full cycle in heat and in cool before we leave. Call us and describe what the thermostat is doing.

The thermostat installation symptoms we hear most

  • The screen is completely blank Dead batteries, a tripped breaker, or a failed low-voltage circuit at the equipment
  • It says 72 but the room feels like 65 Failed temperature sensor, or a thermostat mounted on an exterior wall or in direct sun
  • The heat runs constantly and never satisfies Wrong equipment configuration, often a heat pump set up as a conventional furnace
  • My new smart thermostat keeps dropping offline or rebooting No common wire, so the thermostat is power-stealing from the control board
  • Upstairs cooks while downstairs stays cold A single thermostat controlling a house that needs zoning controls or damper repair

People call this thermostat installation or thermostat replacement. Same visit, same written quote, same technician.

Safe things to check first

Worth a look before you call — sometimes it saves you the visit.

  • 1Replace the thermostat batteries if it takes them, and see whether the display comes back.
  • 2Confirm the mode and setpoint: heat or cool selected, fan on auto, and the schedule not holding an old temperature.
  • 3Check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker on the furnace, air handler, or outdoor unit.
  • 4Walk the house and make sure supply and return vents are open and not blocked by furniture, and change the filter if it is dirty.

Thermostat Installation — quick answers

Can I put a smart thermostat on a heat pump?

Usually yes, but the thermostat has to support heat pump staging and auxiliary heat, and it has to be configured for it. A thermostat set up as a furnace will run electric backup heat far more than needed. We verify the setup on a live cycle.

What is a common wire and why does it matter?

The common wire, or C wire, gives a thermostat steady 24 volt power instead of borrowing it from the heating or cooling circuit. Without it, smart thermostats reboot or drop Wi-Fi. We can often add one or install an adapter at the equipment.

Do I need a new thermostat if my system is old?

Not always. Older single-stage equipment works fine with a simple thermostat. Replacement makes sense when the display fails, the temperature reading drifts, or you are adding stages, a heat pump, or zoning controls that need better control.

How long does a thermostat installation take?

A straight replacement on existing wiring is typically under an hour, including configuration and watching a heat and a cool cycle. Adding a common wire, relocating the thermostat, or setting up zoning controls takes longer because we work at the equipment too.

Will zoning controls fix my hot upstairs?

Sometimes. Zoning controls help when ductwork can be split into areas that genuinely need different amounts of air. If the real problem is undersized returns, leaky duct, or poor insulation, zoning alone will not solve it. We look at the duct system first.

Can you move my thermostat to a different wall?

Often, yes. Thermostats near a kitchen, a sunny window, a supply vent, or an exterior wall read the wrong temperature and short-cycle the system. Relocating means running new low-voltage wire, so we look at wall access and framing before we quote the work.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form. Describe the noise, the smell, the temperature, and when it started. That detail helps us bring the right parts and gives you an honest idea of the visit ahead.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, refrigerant behaviour and the outdoor unit. We tell you what failed and why, in plain language, before anyone reaches for a part or a price.

  3. Step 3

    You choose the repair

We lay out the fix, any parts on order, and what happens if you wait. Once you agree, we do the work and confirm the system holds temperature before we pack up and leave.

Why homeowners call us

  • Heat pumps are our normalIn this region heat pumps outnumber furnaces, so defrost boards, reversing valves and short cycling in wet weather are everyday work for us. We know how these systems behave in a cold December rain, not just on a test bench.
  • Wet winter defrost problemsIce on the outdoor coil, a unit that runs and runs without warming the house, puddles that refreeze under the pad. We trace whether it is a sensor, a stuck valve, drainage, or airflow, then fix the actual cause.
  • Filtration after smoke seasonWildfire smoke turned indoor air quality into a real conversation here. We look at filter fit, return sizing and IAQ options that your blower can actually push air through, rather than choking the system with the wrong media.
  • We explain before we chargeYou get the diagnosis, the options and the trade-offs before work starts. If a repair is not worth it on an old system, we say so. No pressure, no jargon dumped on you at the door.
