The independent heating and cooling company across the Willamette Valley and northwest Oregon

Smart Thermostat Installation

We install smart thermostats in homes across Oregon and Washington, wiring them correctly to heat pumps, furnaces, air handlers and auxiliary heat so every stage actually runs. Most homeowners call us when a new thermostat will not power up, when the app controls the fan but not the heat, or when they want scheduling and remote access before winter. Tell us what equipment you have and what the old thermostat looked like, and we will confirm the wiring you need and book the visit.

What the job involves

We start at the equipment, not the wall. A smart thermostat needs constant power, which usually means a common wire, and a heat pump needs the reversing valve and auxiliary heat terminals set the right way. We shut power down, remove the old control, check what wires are actually in the cavity, and run new cable if the count is short. Then we mount level, configure the equipment type, and test heating, cooling, fan and emergency heat one stage at a time before we leave.

What we check and install

We verify the wire count and the transformer load, confirm the C wire or add an adapter if the run cannot be replaced, and check the outdoor unit's defrost and staging behavior with the new control in place. We set the heat pump lockouts so backup heat is not fighting the compressor on a mild wet morning. We connect the thermostat to your home network, build a starting schedule, and walk you through the app so it is not a mystery a week later.

How we decide it is the right call

A smart thermostat is a good fit when your equipment is sound and you want better scheduling, remote control and filter reminders. It is the wrong fix if the real problem is short cycling, a failing capacitor, low airflow or a system sized wrong for the house. We test the equipment first. If the heating or cooling fault is upstream, we tell you that and quote the repair instead, because a new control will not hide it. Older millivolt or line voltage systems need a different approach, and we will say so.

Smart Thermostat Installation — quick answers

Will a smart thermostat work with my heat pump?

Usually yes, but it has to be configured for heat pump operation with the reversing valve and auxiliary heat set correctly. Miswired, it runs backup heat constantly. We set staging and lockouts during installation and test each mode.

Do I need a C wire?

Most smart thermostats want one for steady power. If your wall has spare conductors we repurpose one. If not, we either pull new cable or fit an adapter at the equipment, whichever suits the run.

Can you install a thermostat I already bought?

Yes. Bring it out of the box and we will confirm it matches your equipment before we wire anything. If it will not control your system properly, we tell you before installation rather than after.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form. Describe the noise, the smell, the temperature, and when it started. That detail helps us bring the right parts and gives you an honest idea of the visit ahead.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, refrigerant behaviour and the outdoor unit. We tell you what failed and why, in plain language, before anyone reaches for a part or a price.

  3. Step 3

    You choose the repair

We lay out the fix, any parts on order, and what happens if you wait. Once you agree, we do the work and confirm the system holds temperature before we pack up and leave.

Why homeowners call us

  • Heat pumps are our normalIn this region heat pumps outnumber furnaces, so defrost boards, reversing valves and short cycling in wet weather are everyday work for us. We know how these systems behave in a cold December rain, not just on a test bench.
  • Wet winter defrost problemsIce on the outdoor coil, a unit that runs and runs without warming the house, puddles that refreeze under the pad. We trace whether it is a sensor, a stuck valve, drainage, or airflow, then fix the actual cause.
  • Filtration after smoke seasonWildfire smoke turned indoor air quality into a real conversation here. We look at filter fit, return sizing and IAQ options that your blower can actually push air through, rather than choking the system with the wrong media.
  • We explain before we chargeYou get the diagnosis, the options and the trade-offs before work starts. If a repair is not worth it on an old system, we say so. No pressure, no jargon dumped on you at the door.
