Leaky Duct Diagnosis

Leaky duct diagnosis is the work of finding where conditioned air escapes your duct system before it reaches the rooms you live in, and we do it for homeowners across Oregon and Washington. You need it when one bedroom never keeps up, when the system runs long without satisfying the thermostat, or when your crawlspace or attic feels warmer than it should in summer. Call us and describe which rooms fall short and how long the system runs. We will schedule a visit and test the ductwork rather than guess at it.

What the job involves

We start at the thermostat and the equipment, then follow the duct runs into the crawlspace, attic, or garage ceiling where most leaks hide. We measure supply and return airflow, check static pressure across the air handler or furnace, and look for the disconnected boot, the failed tape, or the crushed flex line that explains the room you are complaining about. Where access allows, we pressure test sections to separate real leakage from a simple balancing problem. You get findings in plain language, with photos of what we found.

What we check

Connections at plenums and takeoffs, because that is where separation starts. Old cloth tape that has dried out and let go. Flex duct that sags, kinks, or lost its insulation jacket. Return leaks pulling crawlspace air, which matters in wet Northwest winters and again during smoke season when you want filtered air, not dusty air from under the house. We also check register and grille sizing, damper positions, and whether a past remodel left a run feeding nowhere. Filter condition tells us a lot too.

How we decide it is the right call

If your heating or cooling equipment tests fine and the rooms still disagree, the ducts are the next suspect. Big temperature swings between floors, a system that runs and runs, dust that returns days after cleaning, or an outdoor unit cycling more than the weather explains all point that direction. We would rather diagnose than sell. If the fix is a few sealed joints and a re-hung run, we say so. If replacement of a section makes better sense, we show you why first.

Leaky Duct Diagnosis — quick answers

How do you find a duct leak without tearing anything open?

We use airflow and static pressure readings, visual inspection at accessible joints, and pressure testing where we can isolate a section. Most leaks show up at connections we can reach in a crawlspace or attic.

Can leaky ducts affect indoor air quality?

Yes. Return-side leaks pull air from crawlspaces, attics, or garages into your system, carrying dust, moisture, and outdoor smoke. Sealing returns often does more for IAQ than upgrading the filter alone.

Is duct leakage the reason one room is always cold?

Often, though not always. A disconnected boot or crushed flex run will starve a room, but so will a closed damper or undersized return. Testing tells us which before any repair starts.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form. Describe the noise, the smell, the temperature, and when it started. That detail helps us bring the right parts and gives you an honest idea of the visit ahead.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, refrigerant behaviour and the outdoor unit. We tell you what failed and why, in plain language, before anyone reaches for a part or a price.

  3. Step 3

    You choose the repair

We lay out the fix, any parts on order, and what happens if you wait. Once you agree, we do the work and confirm the system holds temperature before we pack up and leave.

Why homeowners call us

  • Heat pumps are our normalIn this region heat pumps outnumber furnaces, so defrost boards, reversing valves and short cycling in wet weather are everyday work for us. We know how these systems behave in a cold December rain, not just on a test bench.
  • Wet winter defrost problemsIce on the outdoor coil, a unit that runs and runs without warming the house, puddles that refreeze under the pad. We trace whether it is a sensor, a stuck valve, drainage, or airflow, then fix the actual cause.
  • Filtration after smoke seasonWildfire smoke turned indoor air quality into a real conversation here. We look at filter fit, return sizing and IAQ options that your blower can actually push air through, rather than choking the system with the wrong media.
  • We explain before we chargeYou get the diagnosis, the options and the trade-offs before work starts. If a repair is not worth it on an old system, we say so. No pressure, no jargon dumped on you at the door.
