What Crowding Does to a Heat Pump or AC Over Time
The outdoor unit moves heat between your house and the air around it, and it needs a lot of air to do that. Block the sides or the top and it starts breathing its own exhaust. Pressures climb, the compressor runs hotter and longer, and cooling capacity drops on the days you want it most. In winter a heat pump has the same problem in reverse, plus wet leaves packed into the coil hold moisture and make defrost cycles messier. None of this fails on day one. It shortens the life of parts quietly, then shows up as a repair call.
How Much Space It Actually Needs
Aim for roughly two feet of open air on every side of the cabinet and four to five feet of clear space above it. Nothing solid overhead, and no lattice, trellis or decorative screen tight against the coil. If you want to hide the unit, leave a full gap behind any screening and keep one side fully open so a technician can pull the panel and get a gauge set on it. Plants are fine at a distance. Shrubs that will reach the cabinet in three summers are not. Gravel or a pad underneath beats bark dust, which drifts into the coil.
The Simple Habit That Prevents Most of It
Walk out to the unit once a month with your eyes open. Pull out the leaves, needles and cottonwood fluff caught in the fins. Move whatever migrated over there since last time, and yard bags tend to reappear. Cut back growth that is closing in. Rinsing the coil gently with a garden hose from the outside in, with the system off at the thermostat, clears surface dirt. Do not open panels, touch wiring or poke at the refrigerant lines. In fall, do it after the leaves drop. In winter, keep snow and ice clear of the base and the top.
Warning Signs the Clearance Problem Has Already Cost You
Longer run times for the same comfort is usually the first sign. Then the house takes the edge off but never reaches setpoint on hot afternoons, or the heat pump leans on backup heat more than it used to in mild weather. Ice building on the outdoor coil and staying there, water pooling oddly, a unit that trips its breaker on repeat, or a new grinding or rattling from the fan all mean stop and call. Repeated breaker trips are not a reset-and-forget situation. At that point clearing the brush helps, but the system likely needs a look.

Can I build a fence or screen around my outdoor unit?
Yes, if you leave real space. Keep about two feet from the cabinet on the screened sides, nothing solid overhead, and one side fully open for service access. Tight, solid enclosures trap hot air and cost you capacity.
Is it bad to plant shrubs next to it?
Plants are fine at a distance, but think about their mature size. Anything that will touch the cabinet within a few years will eventually restrict airflow and drop leaves and needles into the coil. Two feet of clearance, minimum.
Should I cover the unit in winter?
No full wrap. Heat pumps run all winter and need airflow, and covers trap moisture against metal. If falling debris is the concern, a top-only cover on an AC-only unit is acceptable. Keep snow and ice clear of the base.
