Age matters, but it isn't the whole answer
A furnace in its first decade is almost always worth repairing. Past the fifteen year mark, we start weighing repairs differently, because a heat exchanger and a blower motor that have been cycling for that long tend to fail in sequence rather than one at a time. That said, we have seen well maintained units run long past what anyone expected, and neglected ones fail early. Age tells us what to inspect closely. It does not decide anything by itself. We look at how the unit was installed, whether filters were changed, and what the burners and flame pattern look like now.
The type of fault tells us most of what we need
Some failures are ordinary wear. Igniters, flame sensors, pressure switches, capacitors, limit switches and control boards are parts we replace regularly, and replacing one on an otherwise sound furnace is straightforward heating repair. Other faults change the conversation. A cracked heat exchanger is a safety condition, not a repair item, and we shut the unit down rather than patch around it. Parts availability and system matching
Parts get harder to find as models age out. If a control board or a specific gas valve is discontinued, we may be waiting on a salvage part, and a house without heat in a wet Oregon or Washington winter cannot wait long. Matching matters too. If your furnace shares ductwork with an AC coil or a heat pump, replacing one half of the system can leave you with airflow that does not suit either piece. We check duct sizing and static pressure before recommending equipment, because a well matched system quietly outperforms an oversized one.
How the visit actually goes

Sometimes. A small part on a furnace that otherwise tests clean can be worth fixing. A major component failure at that age usually is not, especially if parts are scarce or the heat exchanger shows problems.
What if I smell gas near the furnace?
Leave the house first. Do not flip switches. Call 911 or your gas utility from outside, let them make it safe, then call us and we will inspect the furnace and its venting before it runs again.
Should I replace my furnace and AC at the same time?
Often yes, if both are old. Matched equipment and correctly sized ductwork perform better together, and one install visit means less disruption. If one unit has years left, we will say so.
